LOS OLIVOS — Sofia Hamilton earned a third-place finish at the high school mountain biking state championships as Drake took home a first-place finish. Redwood finished second and San Rafael came in third.
Hamilton completed the 18-mile course in the Santa Ynez Canyon in a time of 1 hour, 23 minutes, 51 seconds. Branson’s Kate Courtney finished fourth in the girls field with a time of 1:24.14, and Drake’s Mackinzie Stanley was fifth at 1:26.24. Read the rest of this entry

Sonya Looney knows a lot of the mistakes you could make in a mountain bike stage race because she’s made them.
Like when she left her jacket at the aid station during the Breck Epic and rode high into the mountains…and into nasty weather.
“I was so cold I couldn’t feel my brake levers,” she said.
Fortunately the local mountain bike pro learns from her mistakes and knows how to race smart. She and her stage race partner (and teammate on Team Topeak-Ergon), Jeff Kerkove, are giving a presentation at REI Wednesday night on how to successfully ride a multi-day mountain bike race.
